KEREM:- A Program for
Jewish Studies for the High School Student
Kehillat Shalom's Kerem program is proud to
present two courses this year. Both courses
are rooted in the ideal of life-long Jewish
learning. The classes are designed to
approach Jewish studies on the High School
level, challenging students appropriately.
Both Sadnah and Shiur classes are taught by
Miron Hirsch.
Sadnah
Sadnah presents a relaxed environment for
the exploration of Jewish thought. Sadnah,
the Hebrew word for seminar or workshop,
meets weekly. In addition to a tasty Kosher
dinner, Kerem's Sadnah course features open
conversation, timeless ideas, and it
addresses topics rarely covered in
conventional Hebrew schools. Almost all
topics are chosen by the students or are
presented in reaction to current events.
Topics are explored with classic texts
(Bible, Midrash, Talmud) as well as modern
thinkers. Last year's topics included
Judaism's requirements for a just war, the
origins of the orange on the seder plate,
Hasidism, and adoption in Jewish law and
life. All levels are welcome; proficiency in
Hebrew is not required. Classes take place
on Sunday nights from 5:15-7:30 p.m.
Shiur
The Kerem program is again proud to present
a weekly shiur in classic Jewish texts. This
class is geared towards students wishing to
obtain or improve the key skills needed for
proficiency with the core texts of Judaism
such as Mishnah, Talmud, and Midrash. The
course will survey specific units of these
core texts, as well investigate their
origins, authors, and ideals. This more
formal course is taught in English; however,
the texts will be explored in Hebrew, so the
ability to read Hebrew is required for
attendance. As with the Sadnah, a tasty
Kosher dinner will be served as a part of
class. Classes will take place Tuesday
evenings at 6:00 p.m., and end shortly after
8:00 p.m.
Each class requires a JPS Hebrew-English
Bible
